A 225-metre-long international vessel recently entered the Dutch ports. The ship's original undercarriage, of Chinese brokerage, contained numerous asbestos-containing electricity cables. Meuva was did the honours to carry out the asbestos remediation work.
The locations contaminated with asbestos, with associated risk classes, were located beforehand by an SC-540 certified inventory agency. The objects containing asbestos consisted mainly of electrical piping.
The biggest challenge for Meuva was to find a mode to secure parts of the ship with the crew and the contractor for the new cables. In this way old cables could be removed, and new ones installed, without endangering safety on board. Additional challenges were the limited spaces and hard-to-reach cabling.
Close cooperation and a good consultation structure with both the client and other contractors were essential for the success of this great project.
